Awakening the Dragon - The Dragon Boat Festival

Dragon Boat Racing is very popular!  In ancient times, the Chinese saw the dragon as both a protector and a threat, able to bring on rain or cause droughts. To honor this powerful creature, people created long narrow boats that they raced in an annual rainmaking festival. Some types of Dragons lived in rivers.  The Dragon Boat Festival was meant to bring luck, during the unluckiest time of the year that is traditionally celebrated in the fifth month on the fifteenth day.

The book does a great job of exploring the origins, legends, customs, and in the modern day the Dragon Boat Races.  Every other page has some type of illustration on it that is extremely lifelike.

Arlene Chan, a respected librarian and an experienced dragon boat racer wrote the book. The beautifully detailed illustrations by Song Nan Zhang let you experience the Dragon Boat Festival and Racing. Soft Cover
