Celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival by Sanmu Tang, softcover,

The book does a great job of telling why they eat Zongzi (a dish of stick rice with a billing of meat, red bean paste, jujube paste for the filling tied up in a wrapper of leaves) during the Dragon Boat Festival

Dragon Boat Racing is very popular! In ancient times, the Chinese saw the dragon as both a protector and a threat, able to bring on rain or cause droughts. To honor this powerful creature, people created long narrow boats that they raced in an annual rainmaking festival. Some types of Dragons lived in rivers. The Dragon Boat Festival was meant to bring luck, during the unluckiest time of the year that is traditionally celebrated in the fifth month on the fifteenth day.

The Dragon Boat Festival is one of the most important of the Chinese Holidays, second only in importance to Chinese New Year.
