How We Started
My wife and I started ChildBook.com in 1997 because we got very frustrated with
the Chinese items we could buy in the US to teach our daughter
Mandarin. We had agreed that we wanted to give our daughter the
wonderful gift of being bilingual in Mandarin and English (trilingual
if you count Taiwanese). So we started bugging relatives coming from
Taiwan, visiting every Chinese bookstore and got terribly frustrated
with the variety, quality, and price. Then I was taking an MBA class
(Peter Drucker was teaching it)
that had a class project to develop a business improvement project.
Starting your own business is one way to improve one, and after our
presentation
ChildBook.com was born in 1997 with the mission of providing Chinese
language
and cultural materials. Our goal has been high quality items and
service, at a fair price, that we would be proud to be associated with.
The Journey
Initially ChildBook.com started with books and using the Internet as a
way to sell them. People had to send in their checks and we shipped out
the books, tapes, and some CD's. We then noticed that Video's are
available that have the same format as the US including Disney with
excellent quality. That means their daughter could watch Video's in
Mandarin in the US. So Video's got added to ChildBook and the name lost
some of it's meaning. Along the way, we got a shopping cart, SSL,
changed E-Commerce systems to a database driven one, got very good at
fixing bugs, and talked to a lot of wonderful customers, who we have
made a very positive difference in their lives.
The Future
Our plan is to keep on improving ChildBook and providing great items
and service to our customers. If you have any suggestions, problems,
complaints, or questions, please send an E-Mail. The best part of
running ChildBook.com is the positive feedback from our customers.
Customer feedback is very educational and we honestly don't get enough
of it.
Mission
Our mission at Child Book.com is to provide high quality Culture and
Language Chinese children's items, so Children and Adults can learn the
language, the culture, and the identity and dignity of being of Chinese
Heritage. We want your experience to be like going to a local store,
where you would walk in, be greeted by name by the owner, and given
some tea while you browse through our store and leave with a positive
feeling.
As parents, we owe our Children to teach them about their heritage and
culture while they are young. The reason we started www.childbook.com
was our personal experience in trying to get quality Chinese Children's
Books in the US.
Since our daughter was born, we have experienced much valuable and fun
time together reading children's book to her, especially in our native
language Chinese (his wife's) and English (Ray's). We would like all
Parents outside of China and Taiwan to have this experience of being
able to read Chinese to their Children. The bond of love and joy that
we have experienced though reading stories in Chinese and English
together has been essential to bringing up our daughter the way we want
her to be. Having the best of both American and Chinese Culture.
Our goal as parents is to have our daughter be excellent and know both
American and Chinese Culture, and be able to speak both English and
Chinese without an accent. We see teaching our daughter Chinese as
essential in giving our daughter the best experience in childhood and
one of the greatest gifts we can ever give her.
Teachers all say it is very important to read to your children, because
this will help them in school. We would add it is important to keep a
have reading done both in Chinese and English.
We realize our site is not perfect and is a constant work in process.
We are constantly working to improve our site to make your customer
experience the best possible.
