"...My husband and I are Chinese-speakers and I teach Chinese at college level... We soon realized that there are not that many good textbooks to teach Chinese to children. With Chinese Made Easy for Kids we finally found an easy and entertaining book to teach written Chinese to our four year old... The textbook has fun, colorful illustrations, and the workbook is full of entertaining and creative activities. This book is a great way to introduce your child to Chinese. It comes with a CD so, if you do not speak Chinese at home, your child (and you) can still mimic the sounds and learn how to speak the language. I would rate this book with 5 stars."

What you Can Expect to Learn from Chinese Made Easy for Kids
Phonetic Symbols and Tones. The children will be immediately immersed in phonetic symbols and tones. The author believes children will overcome the confusion quickly. With more exposure, the children will eventually pick up good Mandarin pronunciation and intonation. Pinyin will be reinforced continuously, but printed in light gray so that the kids will be drawn to the Chinese characters instead.
Chinese Characters. Chinese characters will be taught according to the character formation system. Once the children have a good grasp of radicals and simple characters, they will be able to analyze most of the compound characters they see. They will also get to understand and memorize new characters in a logical way.
Vocabulary and Sentence Structure. Kids pick up words easily if they recognize it around them. Chinese Made Easy for Kids teach new words and how to form sentences correctly by using example sentences in the family, school, play areas and other interesting matters for kids.

Kids will develop oral communication skills through audio exercises in the included CD, dialogues, Q&A and speaking practice. How to Use Chinese Made Easy for Kids
A Few Suggestions from the Author:
The teacher should:
- provide every opportunity for kids to use their listening and speaking skills. The exercises in the books can be modified to match the children's ability.
- go over the phonetic exercises in the textbook with the students. Later, children should be encouraged to pronounce Pinyin on their own.
- emphasize the importance of learning the basic strokes and stroke order of the characters. Teacher should demonstrate the stroke order of each character to total beginners. With regular practice of counting strokes, kids will find it easy to recognize characters and learn new ones.
- guide children to analyze new characters and encourage them to use their imagination to aid memorization.
- modify the games in the textbook to match the children's abilities
- skip, modify or extend some exercises according to children's levels. Use and/ or modify activities for class or homework.
- encourage kids to recite the times table at the end of Book 3 and 4. Not only will they easily memorize numbers, tey can also learn multiplication.
After the lessons, children are expected to:
- trace new characters in each lesson
- memorize radicals and simple characters
- recite the rhymes in each lesson
- listen to the recording of the text a few times in Book 3 and 4, and tell the story if they can. Stories are in picture book form so kids should find them appealing.
Note: The text for each lesson, audio exercises, phonetic symbols and rhymes are on the CD attached to the textbook. The symbol indicates the track number. For example, CD-T1 is Track one.
