Chinese Moon Festival and Autumn Festival Calendar:

The Chinese Moon Festival this year will be held on September 8, 2014. Most organizations listed below are celebrating their events on the later part of September and early October.

On the festival day, family members gather to offer sacrifice to the moon, appreciate the bright full moon, eat moon cakes, and express strong yearnings toward family members and friends who live afar. In addition, there are some other customs like playing lanterns, and dragon and lion dances in some regions.

The Moon Cake is the special food of Mid-Autumn Festival. On that day, people sacrifice moon cakes to the moon as an offering and eat them for celebration. Moon cakes come in various flavors according to the region. The moon cakes are round, symbolizing the reunion of a family, so it is easy to understand how the eating of moon cakes under the round moon can evoke longing for distant relatives and friends. Nowadays, people present moon cakes to relatives and friends to demonstrate that they wish them a long and happy life.

Have fun and give thanks for all the family's blessings this season by participating in the different community Moon Festivals across the US and Canada. Dress up in Chinese dresses and pants, bring along your moon cakes and moon poems and have fun with your family as autumn starts.

The 8th Annual Mid-Autumn Moon Festival

Sunday, September 8, 2013

Towne Bank Fountain Park, at Town Point Park, Downtown Norfolk Waterfront

The 8th Annual Mid-Autumn Moon Festival celebrates a tradition dating back thousands of years in many Asian countries honoring a good harvest, youth, families, and community! The Mid-Autumn Moon Festival is often compared to America's Thanksgiving tradition, and is a time honored Asian holiday that marks the end of the summer harvest.

This festival incorporates a wide range of entertainment and programs that include storytelling, authentic Asian Ceremonial fashion shows, ribbon and dragon dancing, martial arts demonstrations, children's activities, musical and dance performances, children's lantern parade, and special appearances by the Moon Goddess.

This event is produced in partnership with Friends of Pagoda, Oriental Garden Foundation and Local Chinese Organizations.
