For the

We are going to learn about the most
important holiday for people in the Chinese culture. Then, let's practice one
of the favorite events of the Chinese
New Year
|

Input
What
information is essential for the student to know before beginning and how
will this skill be communicated to the students
|
Chinese New Year is the biggest holiday for Chinese, and is also
called the Spring Festival. It happens approximately at the end of
January, early February. Chinese New Year is based on the Lunar
Calendar, which is different than the regular Calendar. This means that
Chinese New Year falls on a different day each year. Chinese name their
years, and have a cycle of 12 animals they are named after. A person
born in a year is supposed to be like that animal. Some animals, such
as Dragons, are favored over other animals. The animals are: Rabbit, Dragon,
Snake, Horse, Sheep (ram), Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig(boar), Rat(mouse), Ox,
Tiger.
*Read Happy New Year by Demi (10 minutes)
* Alternatively: Have a guest speaker come talk to the
class about the Chinese New Year.
Adjust the rest of the plan accordingly.

the tradition of red envelopes and pass them out. Use play money, or have the
children make their own, if time allows.

Assignment will depend on age group. For the younger kids who do not write
well, pass out coloring pictures on the Chinese New Year.
For the
older students: Write a paragraph
about what you have learned about the Chinese New Year, red envelopes. The
kids can also look up their zodiac sign based upon the year of birth.

With so many choices, decide what works and
what does not based on the age group taught.
What would you do different or the same? Do you need to adjust the time for each segment of the
lesson? Would it work better to have
the lesson in 2 parts, so more time can be concentrated on certain
activities?
