that hanging the lucky fu on doors and walls started from an old tale that happened during the Ming Dynasty.

It was said that one day, the emperor was travelling when he saw posters insulting his empress.

He countered by distributing fu posters to the other households and instructed them to post the fu on their doors.

By dawn, all houses that didn't have the fu poster on their doors had perished in a fire.  Yikes, but that was the story.
