Chinese for Adults - Learning Tips

Yes, adults can still learn Chinese.

It has been a common misconception that adults cannot learn another language.  It has been found that one of the main barriers of adults learning a new language is that new sounds are not perceived easily, because the sounds heard are adapted to match sounds from the language the adult already knows.

There are several different language learning methods that have studied the way adults learn most language effectively.  You just have to choose one that you think is most suited for your learning style.

Some of the learning language styles say that people learn best :
  • with repetition
  • with presentation of lessons are oral first, then later on in written form
  • when learner anticipates what should be expressed next and thinks of the reply
  • using activities that require meaningful communication
  • when language is meaningful to the learner
  • by learning to understand by listening first, then speaking will follow naturally.
  • interacting with everyday people using the language, etc.
Here are some of the things that can be done to learn Chinese quick and easy.  Try and see which one works for you.

Use structured audio programs.  These programs can be learned during the commute to work or school.  One audio program offered by ChildBook, the Pimsleur program merges 2 methods - 1) for learners to anticipate the reply of the other and thus, think of the next reply, and 2) interval recall.  The Pimsleur method has measured numerous subjects and claims to have found the optimal time for a learner to recall learned words and phrases, making phrases hard to forget.
Watch Chinese movies on video or in cable.  You can choose to watch movies and TV shows in Chinese, so you can practice understanding the rapid, conversational flow of Chinese.
Use flashcards.  Some adults find that practicing with flash cards are effective with remembering learned words and phrases.
Use software.  Seeing the video and hearing the tones make it easy for adults to learn Chinese with software.  Also some software have built-in dictionaries that make looking up words easier.
Quick Guides.  Compilations of the sentences that an adult will most use is very handy and time saving for the adult on the go.  Some adults prefer learning sentences that are used in everyday situations, at work or when outside.
Textbooks.  Want to learn Chinese comprehensively.  If you want to make time to learn the whole caboodle of Chinese, it is best to use textbooks systems for adults. These are usually complete with books, textbooks, CDs, software and teacher's guides.  Textbooks for adults also use words and sentences that are more meaningful and useful in university or the office, so the learner will be motivated to learn these.
Be exposed to the language.   Venture out to Chinatown, the market, the library, anywhere you get to hear Chinese.  Everything that you learned with your different materials will matter more if you get to hear these in actual conversation.  Better if you're the one talking and listening.  If you have the means to do so, visit China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and other Chinese-speaking territories.  There you will be sure to practice and be alert for understanding and responding in Chinese.

Think you're ready to start getting that Chinese advantage?
