Wu Ze Tian was the only woman in the history of China to assume the title of Emperor. She was first chosen to the royal court to serve the first Tang emperor at the age of fourteen. When the emperor died, she was sent to the convent as a nun. She was able to return to the royal court to serve the new emperor and slowly built up her power controlling the empire. In 690 A.D., she declared herself the sole ruler of China and founded her own dynasty, the Chou Dynasty. She ruled under the name Emperor Shengshen from 690 to 705 A.D. Her rise and reign has been harshly criticized by historians.

The life of Empress Wu has been told in various format of literatures, operas, plays, TV mini-series, and films. The young readers will enjoy this well illustrated children book and learn about the history of China.
