The year is 1934, and the United States does not welcome Chinese immigrants. Upon arrival in San Francisco, Kai is detained on Angel Island. The crowded barracks, harsh interrogations, and constant threat of being returned to China are not what he expected to find in San Francisco. Will Kai ever be free to join his father in Gold Mountain?

Angel Island was the Ellis Island of the West Coast for Chinese for about a 100 years. It's a small Island located in the San Francisco Bay and is now a National Park. The barracks and other structures are still standing and are now a museum. There is a ferry from Tiburon to the Island among the options. What is great about this book is it's based on a true story and there are pictures of Albert with his grandson in the back of the book. The barracks are closed for renovation and open in 2008. I found out about Angel Island when I saw a play called Paper Son that I highly recommend. Paper sons are those Chinese who pretended to be children of other people so they could get into the US while Angel Island was going. Here is a teacher's guide.
