  1. 6 Review done so far in September! An improvement for the 1 from last week.

  2. More excitement is on the way for ChildBook!  The web site is going through a redesign by a professional.  Most of you are probably going, finally!  I have been doing my own web design for the past 12 years and it's very functional.  The professional I have hired is making it functional, as well as a bit nicer looking.  She is also redoing the logo.  The original logo was done by very talented Graphic Artist friend of mine/classmate, then I messed with it a bit (added the word Chinese, which I should have had her do (even tiny changes, like adding one word can...).  Currently we are still in the graphic mock up mode that has made a lot of progress.  The next step is actual coding, then going live.  Non technical explanation - we are updating the look of the site, but the underneath part is staying the same.

  3. This week was my birthday, so I am doing a what I like sale.  And this year, for whatever reason I did not have the usual Chinese Whip Cream cake with fruit in the middle I usually get, but a very decadent Chocolate Cake (really bad for any type of diets).   I blame seeing the movie Julia & Julie.  The food in the movie was mouth watering!  And they did have a chocolate cake in the movie :-)

  7. The Past week was challenging for me.  There was an E-Mail server change over that resulted in a bunch of E-Mails getting delayed, and then when I finally got them it was an avalanche.  I have finally worked through those.  Nasty javascript issue on a page, so half of it was not showing...  That was fun to figure out. The good news is as problems are found - they are fixed!

Review of the Week:

4 out of 5 Stars - Good for babies and toddlers

By Edith  from TX on 9/12/2009

Pros: Concept clarity, Sound quality

Cons: Lack of verbs

Best Uses: Education, Vocabulary Building

Describe Yourself: Librarian

Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

These DVDs continue in the format of the previous volumes. Words are spoken clearly several times while illustrated by several short active scenes. Most of the scenes have real kids in them, others have the funny little characters on the box. You may choose to have either traditional or simplified Chinese displayed. You may choose to have the English & Pinyin displayed or not, but not just one of the two.

I think a small child will enjoy these. My 5 year old watched one happily. I do think a child much older than that they will tire of the format. An older child needs something that feels more like a story. For a baby I think they are excellent. It does seem odd to me that a whole DVD is devoted to the names of sports -- I'm not sure whether that says something about Chinese culture or about my lack of interest in sports, or both. Anyway, there is certainly nothing wrong with it, but I would hope the series would be continued to include some basic verbs and phrases that a toddler would tend to learn.

Thanks Edith!    She has the cutest son!

18 Reviews for August! Winner is again, TaoTao Mom!

Now why did she win again this month?  Because she did 6 reviews out of the 18 total.  3 of the reviews were anonymous - Mandy of Thousand Oaks should have won, but since they are anonymous I have no idea who they are :-)  And I even did a search in my database of Mandy's in Thousand Oaks and nothing.  So TaoTao had a 6 of 15 review chance and randomly she won.  The winner is randomly selected.

Winning Review from
Ten Re of Arizona
4 Stars - Excellent Vocabulary expansion

Pros:

We have Baby Learns Chinese vol-2 and we were thrilled to see this next set of 4-6 come out. We weren't disappointed. Again the quality of this product is very high. The photos and live action images as well as animation on the dvds are beautiful and engaging.

The viewer can chose between traditional or simplified characters to appear on screen with each new word. Based on Doman, the idea is that the child will associate the sound and image with the written character. There is no pinyin except in the accompanying lyric book which is for the songs only. After each section (there are two topics per dvd), there is a song using the vocab words. I find the songs go a bit fast, and I think they only appear on the screen in traditional even if you chose simplified. They do have the pinyin in the little lyric book, but it is a challenge to read along! And there is no english translation of the dvd text nor the lyric book. So sometimes it is a bit confusing: is the word they are saying and character they are showing mean "shirt" "sweater" "top"?

The vocabulary is quite extensive for the different topics, and goes beyond that which is often given in beginner chinese material, but some very basic words are also missing. Ie they have tram and taxi but not car in the transport section. So I find they are great for rounding out your very basic Chinese vocab. The words are spoken very clearly, but sometimes I would like to have the pinyin onscreen (as an adult) to be sure what I am pronouncing. It is good for learning characters as an adult learner as well.

There are a lot of children in these dvds, and animals, which makes them very attractive to my 3.5 yr old son. He is especially enamored of the vol 6, with its trains and firefighters. He has surprised me by asking to watch this one every day for over a week now, and he pronounces the repeated words along with the dvd. I find they have quite a few older children this time, which is good as it doesn't discourage children who are older toddlers who look up to the big kids.. ie they don't say "this is for babies" even though it is "Baby Learns Chinese".

The flashcards are good quality and fine, just as pictured on this site's images. I do wish that there was some way to sort them by topic or dvd. They are all red one side for traditional and green the other for simplified, so it is a challenge to find just the clothing ones, or transportation ones. The english translation and pinyin is only on the simplified side, so I think they are "traditional" dominant, ie if you hold the simplified up to your child, you cannot read the answer on the back, whereas if you hold up the trad side, you can. And as an adult, the "answers" are on the front of the card if you are studying simplified (but hidden on the back if you look at the traditional.

I wish the flashcards had images, as I find my child loves it when I hold up a flashcard in Chinese, say the chinese word, he answers in english correctly, and I turn it over and it has the answer he has given with an image. However in their promo videos they more show the child picking out the correct character when asked ... so more geared towards learning reading than learning chinese vocab.

All in all, an excellent set which goes beyond the basic, rather limited "family members, colors, shapes, numbers" and expands into other common life objects (verbs and phrases would be a great addition). The three dvds and two boxes of flashcards come in a very nice box for storage or gifting.

Review of the Week!
a lot like Baby Einstein
By Janet from Utah on 7/2/2009

I personally really like it. The words are repeated a lot and then sometimes put into a sentence for a little challenge. I watch it regularly while I do ball exercises. My kids watch it when I'm exercising, but they won't choose to watch it. They are ages 3, 4 ,6 , 10, and 11. I agreed with another review saying the videos were a lot like Baby Einstein.

Review of Chinese Made Easy for Kids 1 May 12, 2009
Reviewer: Patricia from TX
I recently bought from Childbook the textbook and workbook for Chinese Made Easy for Kids. My husband and I are Chinese-speakers and I teach Chinese at college level, so we thought we could teach our kids to read and write in Chinese easily. However, we soon realized that there are not that many good textbooks to teach Chinese to children. With Chinese Made Easy for Kids we finally found an easy and entertaining book to teach written Chinese to our four year old (he speaks Chinese but does not write characters yet). Other Chinese books published for the Chinese community in the US (the ones we used with our older child) tend to be a little bit boring, with black and white pages, no or minimal illustrations and based on old Chinese rhymes that introduce vocabulary that may not be useful for early learners. Chinese Made Easy for Kids is the opposite. Each lesson introduces useful vocabulary (both in characters and pinyin) kids can use right away (i.e. starting with the child's immediate surroundings--family, home, school etc.). The textbook has fun, colorful illustrations, and the workbook is full of entertaining and creative activities. This book is a great way to introduce your child to Chinese. It comes with a CD so, if you do not speak Chinese at home, your child (and you) can still mimic the sounds and learn how to speak the language. I would rate this book with 5 stars
