It has been a common misconception that adults cannot learn another language. It has been found that one of the main barriers of adults learning a new language is that new sounds are not perceived easily, because the sounds heard are adapted to match sounds from the language the adult already knows.
There are several different language learning methods that have studied the way adults learn most language effectively. You just have to choose one that you think is most suited for your learning style.
Some of the learning language styles say that people learn best :
with repetition
with presentation of lessons are oral first, then later on in written form
when learner anticipates what should be expressed next and thinks of the reply
using activities that require meaningful communication
when language is meaningful to the learner
by learning to understand by listening first, then speaking will follow naturally.
interacting with everyday people using the language, etc.

One audio program offered by ChildBook, the Pimsleur program merges 2 methods - 1) for learners to anticipate the reply of the other and thus, think of the next reply, and 2) interval recall. The Pimsleur method has measured numerous subjects and claims to have found the optimal time for a learner to recall learned words and phrases, making phrases hard to forget. If you want to make time to learn the whole caboodle of Chinese, it is best to use textbooks systems for adults. These are usually complete with books, textbooks, CDs, software and teacher's guides. Textbooks for adults also use words and sentences that are more meaningful and useful in university or the office, so the learner will be motivated to learn these. Be exposed to the language. Venture out to Chinatown, the market, the library, anywhere you get to hear Chinese. Everything that you learned with your different materials will matter more if you get to hear these in actual conversation. Better if you're the one talking and listening. If you have the means to do so, visit China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and other Chinese-speaking territories. There you will be sure to practice and be alert for understanding and responding in Chinese.
