This is the first book of the  Lord of the Rings trilogy

The Ruling Ring of Power fell into Bilbo Baggins possession in The Hobbit.  In this story Frodo Baggins inherits the ring from Bilbo.  Gandalf advises Frodo to take the Ring away from the Shire.  Frodo leaves with his loyal gardener,  Samwise "Sam: Gamgee, and two cousins,  Merry and Pippin, to help him.  Gandalf hopes Frodo can reach the elf-haven of Rivendell, where he believes Frodo and the Ring will be safe from Sauron a least for a while, and where those of most concern of Middle-Earth can decide the fate of the Ring.  There are many adventures along the way.
