Monkey King Books in English and Chinese

In the 16th century, during the Tang Dynasty, Wu Chengen wrote Journey to the West.  It is a long novel of how the Monkey King helped bring the Buddhist sutras from India to China.

Monkey King is a favorite Chinese icon because he is mischievous, funny and magical.
He fights with a magic staff that he stores in his ear, but can grow to any size.
He fought the armies of the Chinese gods until the Buddha was forced to intervene.

The stories are great to read.  When I got my first Monkey King Book, my daughter read it in one sitting.
