Moon CakesMoon Cakes are available from Chinese Bakeries and Chinese Markets. Some Moon Cakes are imported from Taiwan and China, and others are made fresh locally. There are also a few sites that sell them on the Internet.
Moon Cakes are a bit heavy, as they are a traditional desert from when the Moon Festival was a Harvest Festival. Traditionally during the Moon Festival Moon Cakes are eaten. Boxes of moon cakes are also given as gifts to important business clients. The costs vary and if you have a Chinese bakery or market, they will carry them. They are also available on on the web (at a higher price). Usual price is around $5 each Moon Cake. I have also seen mini-moon cakes. The price will drop after September 25th (Moon Festival)when the Moon is at it's fullest and closest to the earth.
Moon Cakes symbolize both longevity and good health. They are imprinted with the Moon Goddess, a grove, Jade Rabbit, or a toad. The centers can contain red bean paste (sweat), lotus seed paste, melon, dried fruits, coconut, pineapple, and often have an egg inside. The yolk symbolizes the moon. Moon Cakes are round like the moon, and the circle is a symbol of harmony. In the 14th Century, messages were contained within the Moon Cakes for a rebellion against the Mongols.
