Cost of Mooncakes
Costs of mooncakes vary. Usual price is around $5 each mooncake. The
price will drop after the Moon Festival (September 14th). Mooncakes on
the web can be had at a higher price.
About Mooncakes Mooncakes are traditionally eaten during the Moon Festival. They are a
bit heavy, as they are a traditional desert from when the Moon Festival
was a Harvest Festival. Boxes of moon cakes are also given as gifts to
important business clients. If you have a Chinese bakery or market
nearby, they will carry them. I have also seen mini-moon cakes.
Moon Cakes symbolize both longevity and good health. They are
imprinted with the Moon Goddess, a grove, Jade Rabbit, or a toad. The
centers can contain red bean paste (sweat), lotus seed paste, melon,
dried fruits, coconut, pineapple, and often have an egg inside. The
yolk symbolizes the moon and is considered lucky. Moon Cakes are round
like the moon, and the circle is a symbol of harmony.
In the 14th Century, messages were contained within the Moon Cakes for a rebellion against the Mongols.
