There is no exact equivalent in English for chengyu. Idiom, proverb, saying, expression, each conveys only one aspect of its rather comprehensive functions. In general use, the term "saying" is probably most suitable.

The role of chengyu in the Chinese language in writing as well as in daily colloquial use is an important one.
