Learning Chinese Textbooks by Practical Chinese- Teach your Child Chinese Practical Chinese is a 10 book series, that aligns it's curriculum with the ACTFL (Association Chinese Teachers Foreign Language) and is used by many schools and for individual study. The series is based on daily conversation and incorporates language and culture. The exercises are gradually expanded from writing characters with the stroke order, translating words into Chinese, asking and answering questions according to real life situations, translating sentences, and performing oral presentations. Each chapter builds on the previous chapter and is ideal for self study. With English and Pinyin, it helps non Chinese speakers learn at home by building a solid foundation. Introduction to Pinyin is included in the first level one book. The book series covers Pre-K through College level. There is a workbook and CD/Cassette for each level.
The author, Wendy Lin is a New Jersey certified Chinese language teacher who graduated from the National Taiwan Normal University and earned her two master degrees from the United States. She first came to the United States in 1983 with a full scholarship and earned her M. Ed the next year from Georgia Southwestern State University. In 1991, Wendy graduated from Baruch College, CUNY and earned her M.S. degree in computer science. Wendy has taught at West Windsor Middle School, the Hun School in Princeton, and Marlboro Middle School. She also wrote the curriculum for the Marlboro school district. Currently, she is tutoring individuals and adoptive families other than writing, and teaching in Chinese school. Once a while, she has been invited by the Chinese schools to share her ideas about teaching Chinese as a second language. In her spare time, she writes articles for local medias to share her experience about overseas Chinese education.
“Practical Chinese” book series, also known as “The Effective Way of Learning Reading, Writing, and Speaking Chinese” was originally written for her three American born children to learn Chinese. It is designed to teach Chinese as a second language, focusing more on daily conversation and verb usage, which is different from the traditional learning style that emphasizes writing. When the book series was first introduced, it unexpectedly became overwhelming. Until now, the book series “Practical Chinese” not only has been used nationwide but also has been sold outside the USA, to places such as Canada, Australia, Guam, Hong Kong, China, Israel, etc. Don’t be surprised if you see her books in your local library.
