Author:  Lily Toy Hong grew up in a large Chinese-American family, the seventh of nine children.  Ms. Hong lives in Murray, Utah, with her husband and two young sons.  To prepare for this book, one evening she and her husband spent hours unwinding a cocoon around a chopstick, much as the empress might have done.
