- 6 Review done so far in September! An improvement for the 1 from last week.
- More
excitement is on the way for ChildBook! The web site is going through
a redesign by a professional. Most of you are probably going,
finally! I have been doing my own web design for the past 12 years and
it's very functional. The professional I have hired is making it
functional, as well as a bit nicer looking. She is also redoing the
logo. The original logo was done by very talented Graphic Artist
friend of mine/classmate, then I messed with it a bit (added the word
Chinese, which I should have had her do (even tiny changes, like adding
one word can...). Currently we are still in the graphic mock up mode
that has made a lot of progress. The next step is actual coding, then
going live. Non technical explanation - we are updating the look of
the site, but the underneath part is staying the same.
- This
week was my birthday, so I am doing a what I like sale. And this year,
for whatever reason I did not have the usual Chinese Whip Cream cake
with fruit in the middle I usually get, but a very decadent Chocolate
Cake (really bad for any type of diets). I blame seeing the movie
Julia & Julie. The food in the movie was mouth watering! And they
did have a chocolate cake in the movie :-)

- The
Past week was challenging for me. There was an E-Mail server change
over that resulted in a bunch of E-Mails getting delayed, and then when
I finally got them it was an avalanche. I have finally worked through
those. Nasty javascript issue on a page, so half of it was not
showing... That was fun to figure out. The good news is as problems
are found - they are fixed!

Review of the Week: 4
out of 5 Stars - Good for babies and toddlers
By Edith
from TX on 9/12/2009
Pros: Concept clarity, Sound quality
Cons: Lack of verbs
Best Uses: Education, Vocabulary Building
Describe Yourself: Librarian
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
These DVDs continue in the format of the previous volumes. Words are spoken
clearly several times while illustrated by several short active scenes. Most of
the scenes have real kids in them, others have the funny little characters on
the box. You may choose to have either traditional or simplified Chinese
displayed. You may choose to have the English & Pinyin displayed or not, but
not just one of the two.
I think a small child will enjoy these. My 5 year old watched one happily. I do
think a child much older than that they will tire of the format. An older child
needs something that feels more like a story. For a baby I think they are
excellent. It does seem odd to me that a whole DVD is devoted to the names of
sports -- I'm not sure whether that says something about Chinese culture or
about my lack of interest in sports, or both. Anyway, there is certainly nothing
wrong with it, but I would hope the series would be continued to include some
basic verbs and phrases that a toddler would tend to learn.
Thanks
Edith! She has the cutest son!

18 Reviews for August! Winner is again, TaoTao
Mom!
Now
why did she win again this month? Because she did 6 reviews out of the
18 total. 3 of the reviews were anonymous - Mandy of Thousand Oaks
should have won, but since they are anonymous I have no idea who they
are :-) And I even did a search in my database of Mandy's in Thousand
Oaks and nothing. So TaoTao had a 6 of 15 review chance and randomly
she won. The winner is randomly selected.

Review of Chinese Made Easy for Kids 1 |
May 12, 2009 |
| Reviewer: Patricia from TX |
| I recently bought from Childbook the textbook and workbook for Chinese Made Easy for Kids. My husband and I are Chinese-speakers and I teach Chinese at college level, so we thought we could teach our kids to read and write in Chinese easily. However, we soon realized that there are not that many good textbooks to teach Chinese to children. With Chinese Made Easy for Kids we finally found an easy and entertaining book to teach written Chinese to our four year old (he speaks Chinese but does not write characters yet). Other Chinese books published for the Chinese community in the US (the ones we used with our older child) tend to be a little bit boring, with black and white pages, no or minimal illustrations and based on old Chinese rhymes that introduce vocabulary that may not be useful for early learners. Chinese Made Easy for Kids is the opposite. Each lesson introduces useful vocabulary (both in characters and pinyin) kids can use right away (i.e. starting with the child's immediate surroundings--family, home, school etc.). The textbook has fun, colorful illustrations, and the workbook is full of entertaining and creative activities. This book is a great way to introduce your child to Chinese. It comes with a CD so, if you do not speak Chinese at home, your child (and you) can still mimic the sounds and learn how to speak the language. I would rate this book with 5 stars | | | |
|
Review Contest Guidelines:
