Chinese Autism Program in the US

California Learning Center Offers Autism Programs Tailored for Chinese press release and an article from the San Jose Mercury News Autistic Asians get a window of opportunity

There is often a big shame issue and cultural issue with Chinese parents trying their best to help their kids. And some school districts focus on what is politically expedient, instead of what a child really needs. This is a sore point with me, for a class I was tutoring one summer had a child who was in a special needs class, and he had a balance issue but it was easier to just keep him in the class rather than challenge him. And the Father did not understand the school system so he could not effectively get what his son deserved.

If I went back into Teaching, I would probably get a certificate in Special Ed. I always enjoyed the classes I subbed in and I felt I made a difference with the students I worked with. I had a couple of Special Ed. teachers who insisted on me for their sub.

Special Ed for Chinese Students

Boston Globe article on Special Ed. having a lower amount of Chinese students in it as a percentage. The reason given was parents were parents not knowing about the resources available and cultural. Basically the article was assuming that more students should be in Special Ed. who are ethnic Chinese in Boston. Assumptions are dangerous things to make. A question not asked, are other racial groups over represented in Special Ed. in Boston, if so, why? The special ed classes I have been in have had ethnic Chinese in them, so I am not sure about the chinese cultural issue. Parents do like to compete on whose kid is doing super good in school, and going to what A+ college. The amount of Grades, Study Skills, and College Admission Books shows that, as is the interest in them (which is why I am selling them, as well as reading them).

The parents I have met want to do the best for their kids, no matter what. I have seen it where boys are sometimes favored a bit more than a girl in a family. When older, sometimes only the sons get an inheritance and the daughter don't.

Special Education - The balance

Special Education is a legal nightmare from what I can see. In my opinion, courts are making decisions that is making it challenging for schools on how to allocate money. The problem is legislatures are happy to pass on this hot potato of an issue to the courts which do the best they can based on the existing laws. This may not be best for the children, but that is not the courts mission, their job is to interpret the laws. Interesting article When Should Taxes Pay Private Tuition? about a parent who is suiing so a public school district will pay the private tuition for his child to go to a private school (his child has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and other learning disabilities). Here is one from Google News Special Education: When Should Taxes in case the first link requires a subscription. In my experience subbing, Special Education Classes was usually a good experience and a pleasant change from classes where the kids were deliberately trying to give you a bad day.
