Confucius Institute/Hanban Funding

The Chinese government through Hanban and the Confucius Institutes is spending a tremendous amount of money funding Chinese studies.

Currently there are 523 Confucius Institutes and Confucius Classrooms in 87 countries and regions across the globe. The Confucius Classroom in Hacienda Heights will include a Chinese Teacher and 1000 books to start. My guess is the operating cost for China per year per classroom is $100,000. The goal is to have 1000 institutes world wide by 2020, and the program only started in 2004.

Confucius Institute in Hacienda Heights

Wow! 33 comments so far in my local paper on this!

Parents to voice opposition to Hacienda La Puente School District's Confucius Classroom - San Gabriel Valley Tribune.

Hacienda La Puente School District is an interesting school district (my wife graduated from there and I subbed there) that is a mix of Chinese, Hispanic, and some White students.

Decrease in Foreign Language Classes, except Chinese

Many schools across the US are cutting budgets and a frequent target of this is Foreign Language courses that are seen as nice to have, as compared to must have classes.

But, Chinese is increasing while other foreign language classes get cut. Why?

The Chinese government through the Confucius Institute is supplying teachers and even some funding for Chinese.

Foreign Languages Fade in Class - Except Chinese - NY Times.

I am still figuring out the Confucius Institute.

What I have figured out so far:
  • They have a publisher associated with them
  • Provide teacher training
  • Develop content
  • Provide Chinese teachers
  • Backed by the government of China.
  • They have over 60 locations in the US so far
  • Started in 2004.

Confucius Institute Article

USA Today has an article on the Confucius Institute. I would give the article a C+.

Headline is misleading. They seem to be a very good resource for Learning Chinese.

A culture clash over Confucius Institutes USA Today
The goal: to offer local communities opportunities to learn Chinese language and culture. And, some observers say, to soften China's image as an aggressor ...
