What information is essential for the student to know before beginning and how will this skill be communicated to the students

To some cultures, New Year is the most important holiday of the year.  In fact, preparation starts two weeks before the holiday.  How do you get ready for your holidays?

* Happy Happy Chinese New Year by Demi (hardcover)

(Note: the book has a lot of illustrations for understanding. Practice may be required to be able to read the book while showing the pictures.) (15 minutes)

If you want to turn this lesson into a small unit of 2-3 lessons, bring in a guest speaker, have examples of New Year preparations to discuss and display. Practice some of the traditions in the classroom: cleaning the room, etc.

Model and Check for Understanding

If you will be demonstrating the skill or competence, how will this be done?  Identify strategies to be used to determine if students have learned the objectives

Give students a chance to discuss and ask questions.  A lot of information is in the book.

Discuss how the students would get ready for the holiday: clean their room, make up with a friend, etc.  Write the ideas on the board. (5 minutes)

Guided Practice

List activities which will be used to guide student practice and provide a time frame for completing this practice.

Choose between:

*Make a Happy New Year Sign

*Make a Dragon out of a baseball cap

*Make a Dragon, cut out and put on a stick

The instructions for the crafts are within the front and back covers of the book.

(The craft is based up the age/ability of students and time constraints) (20 minutes)

What method of review and evaluation will be used to complete the lesson?

Have the kids display their crafts around the room.
Independent Practice

List homework/seatwork assignment to be given to the students to ensure they have mastered the skill without teacher guidance.

Assessment What would you do differently?  The same?  Would you divide the lesson into two-three periods, to discuss more of the traditions and to have more time for the crafts?
